Dr Malcolm Francis is a Schlumberger Advisor, an expert in Hydrocarbon Exploration with over 39 years of experience with WesternGeco. He has a BSc in Geology from Manchester University and Geophysics DIC, MSc and PHD from Imperial College London. On Joining Western Geophysical in 1980 he continued in applied research. He went on to manage the seismic interpretation department with responsibility for both special processing and interpretation. He worked on a wide range of projects in many Petroleum Systems around the world. For example, he led a team that explored for and discovered oil and gas in OPL230, Nigeria. He played a central technical role in the reservoir description and drilling operations towards the development of the Abana Field that lead to first oil in record time. Following other adventures, Malcolm’s current role is exploration lead Sub Saharan Africa.
Dr Francis is an active member of the EAGE, where he served on the board as Chair of the oil and Gas division. He helped found and co-chairs the EAGE East Africa Petroleum Geoscience Forum. A member of PESGB, a SEG life member, and a fellow of the Geological Society of London.
Malcolm looks for new places to find hydrocarbons and applies new technology to find what might have been overlooked. His roles within Schlumberger have represented a balance of research, technical innovation, design, interpretation, and management, simply put a jack of all trades!
