Côte d'Ivoire to commission 600 MW of additional solar PV capacity by 2026

Côte d'Ivoire will increase its installed power generation capacity to 3,500 MW by 2025, 5,200 MW by 2030 and 8,600 MW by 2040, Minister of Mines, Petroleum and Energy Mamadou Sangafowa Coulibaly announced this week.

The Minister’s declaration followed the signing of an agreement with local company PFO Africa for the construction of a new 52 MW solar PV plant in Sokhoro, in the Ferkessédougou region. Construction is expected to start in Q2 2024 for a commission in Q3 2025, at a cost of FCFA 39.5 bn. It will be fully financed by PFO Africa’s subsidiary Ferké Solar.

Côte d'Ivoire announced a total of 600 MW of additional solar PV capacity this week, expected to be commissioned between 2025 and 2026. Most projects will be owned by local entities, the government has said.

At COP26, the country committed to increase the share of renewable energy in its electricity kix from 30% today to 45%. Last year, it commissioned its very first solar PV project, the 37.5 MW Boundiali facility which will be expanded to 80 MW.
